CHANGING LIVES THROUGH SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS
CHURCH COMMUNITIES large and small throughout the Portland area are working together with public schools, providing consistent volunteers, and supporting projects. Collaborative efforts such as Community Care Day have become vehicles for awareness, ongoing involvement, and deepening relationships among school administrators, community members, pastors, and ministry leaders.
WHAT IS THE RELATIONAL IMPACT? By partnering with schools, church members discover new opportunities to use their skills and passions in meaningful service to their community. Trust is built between churches, school staff, district officials, city government and area businesses. This supports and enhances the success of students, their families, churches and the entire community.
HOW ARE CHURCHES SERVING LOCAL SCHOOLS: Examples include: grounds and building maintenance, faculty/staff care, back-to-school supplies, clothes and food closets, direct help in the classroom, playground and libraries, tutoring, and volunteering with existing programs that serve at-risk students.
Portland School Superintendent Carol Smith, along with several other local area School Superintendents, has expressed the need for every school to have a church partner. By connecting through real needs in the public school system, local churches can engage in genuine relationships making lasting impacts on the entire community, including the church. -
