"The Defining Difference in My Business"
Our special guest speaker is Bill Gibbons, an educator, author and businessman whose earliest experiences as a student prepared him for the lifelong mission of making a difference in the lives of people. As a student, he found learning difficult because he could not connect learning in school to the real world. Bill did poorly in high school. He was taken off the football team and would have dropped out of school if not for his history teacher, Mr. Dibble. Mr. Dibble saw potential in Bill and offered to help him if he stayed in school. That mentoring led to Bill’s own educational success (twice voted Outstanding Young Educator of the Year) and planted the seed that would later emerge as HOSTS (Help One Student to Succeed), which grew to be the third largest provider of supplemental education services in America. The name HOSTS comes from the Bible, Psalm 103:21, “Bless the Lord, all you, His hosts, you servants of His, who do His pleasure.”
Bill founded HOSTS Corporation in 1977 and served as CEO and Chairman of the Board until 2000 and Founder and Chairman of the Board of HOSTS Learning LLC until 2007. He worked with key educational, business and political leaders in the nation. He has served as an advisor to businesses, foundations, universities and the United States Department of Education, as well as state and local departments of education. The program he founded served over one million students annually in 44 states and Central America and won the following national recognition and awards:
- Identified in the No Child Left Behind Act as a proven research based model for America
- Special recognition from the White House
- Lighthouse Project Award, designated by the Secretary of Education for use of technology in improving education
- Dropout prevention model for the nation by the National Center for Dropout Prevention, Clemson University
- The Education Commission of the States (ECS) identified HOSTS on their “Best Practice” list
- Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching selected HOSTS to participate in a study on effective school reform
Bill has been married to Beverly for 49 years. They have three children and four grandchildren. Mr. Gibbons is a strong proponent of Christian education and biblical world view. After retiring from HOSTS Learning in 2007, he accepted the position as Superintendent of Portland Christian Schools in Portland, Oregon. In 2011, Mr. Gibbons was asked by his pastor to become Superintendent of Cornerstone Christian Academy for Learning and Leadership in Vancouver, Washington, where he is currently serving. Bill is passionate about establishing Christian leaders in our communities.
This meeting is designed to help you build your network, wherein you will be invited to introduce yourself & your organization during the meeting, as well as meet with other guests & members before & after the meeting. There will also be a short presentation regarding the Chamber, as well as a special guest speaker or engaging discussion in regards to a topic designed to help you Connect, Learn, Grow, Save &/or Engage with your community.
