Although this goes against popular practice, it starts to make sense when we start to think about how the brain filters information and responds to subtle cues. In traditional group brainstorming, all ideas are shared aloud, so the first idea creates a frame, or a "priming" that instantly affects everyone in the room. It creates a filter for later ideas. Participants aren't aware of how their ideas are subtly affected by everything that comes before. Additionally, group dynamics decrease the effectiveness of group brainstorming. Subtle non-verbal cues can create an unintentional environment of "group think." We don't realize this, because traditional group brainstorming is good at one thing - creating good feelings and the perception that good ideas have been generated. And that may be true, but, in research settings, it is consistently not the best ideas.
