Event Description:

A number of Portlanders with a history of ministering to the emerging generations have interacted over the past few years regarding the “state of the union” in our mission field, and how we might become more effective in reaching and discipling this strategic age group. Our interaction has been motivated by a growing awareness that the church, both nationally and locally, is struggling here. Research by the Barna and Gallop Groups, and books such as David Kinnaman’s You Lost Me and unChristian, Christian Smith’s Soul Searching: The Religious and Spiritual Lives of American Teenagers, Kenda Creasy Dean’s Almost Christian, and James Emery White’s The Rise of the Nones: Understanding and Reaching the Religiously Unaffiliated, support this contention.

The Portland Collective, formed in January of 2016, consists of men and women with a history of ministry to young people who are in agreement that we are “losing traction” in our mission and ministry to the emerging generations. Rather than following the old wineskin model of making plans and asking God to bless them, we are committed to seeking God for divine solutions, then obediently implementing those solutions. The Collective might thus be described as a "prayer-driven spiritual think tank."

What has come out of our prayers and interaction so far is a conviction of the need to return to basics. Certainly those who do youth or college ministry need to be equipped via the latest resources, gain an understanding of the culture and the relevant current issues, and so on. But the four basics we identified - character, prayer, disciplemaking & justice - while not necessarily THE four essential basics, are important enough that we decided to give them attention via interactive Symposiums over the next few years. This is a good starting point for regaining traction!
